I was also very pleased to see the photographs of Owney at the end of the book -- I felt like saying "Yep, that's him" when I saw the photos. The great job of illustrating started right off with the end pages too. I just love good end pages. Lynne Barasch use of ink-watercolor paintings fit the story perfectly in my opinion. The two-page spreads are in just the right places. The colors used in the illustrations gave me the impression right away that the story took place a long time ago and it did.
