According to his website, Michael Emberley was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Although he does currently reside in Ireland, he is still a US citizen by birthright, which fulfills the Caldecott Award criteria. I'm also fond of many page layouts in this book like the extreme close-up of the mouse on the porcupine and the rabbit's ears hanging out of the frame as he rides with the bear.Dawnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08225267237095728025noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8093828844549988070.post-72981155131874495072011-11-30T15:00:49.901-05:002011-11-30T15:00:49.901-05:00This book is an awesome and touching story! And, I like the placement of the text too. One example of a great effect in the illustrations with text is the two page spread where the bird is trying to fly and the text follows the ups and downs of the bird. I love the shades of blue used in the sky too. The two page spreads lose nothing in the gutters. The illustrations certainly make this story. Simple but beautiful. I think this book has Caldecott potential.Genie Bishophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04566393050021849467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8093828844549988070.post-89656781360862027512011-11-22T15:57:53.157-05:002011-11-22T15:57:53.157-05:00Yes, the illustrations appear to be simple but the...Yes, the illustrations appear to be simple but then as you look at them all kinds of details are revealed. To me the illustrations are sharing history in a beautiful simple way. And, telling the story of how each of us can share history with the next generation. The two page spreads are done well. The wide white borders work well with the story. Definitely don't need words in this book. Oh yes, the end pages are great too.Genie Bishophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04566393050021849467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8093828844549988070.post-6297490497176242042011-11-22T15:44:43.618-05:002011-11-22T15:44:43.618-05:00The illustrations are beautiful in this book. Of ...The illustrations are beautiful in this book. Of course I was drawn in right away because the end pages are so wonderful. The story starts on earth and moves to the moon and so you open the book and there's the earth and moon, how great! For all children that didn't get a chance to sit on their grandmother's lap I think they imagine it the way it is illustrated in this book. It's a lap that completely consumes you and her smile warms you from head to toe. The next illustration that took my breath away was the one where the wave is coming to wipe out homes and lives. Again the two page spread is done so well that it takes your breath away. The color and the feeling of movement is fantastic. The illustrations are bright when it is the beginning of a life and dark when tragedy strikes. I think this has what it takes to be a Caldecott contender.Genie Bishophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04566393050021849467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8093828844549988070.post-13979970939376304212011-11-22T14:57:04.939-05:002011-11-22T14:57:04.939-05:00I love this book. The end pages lead you right into the story by being brightly illustrated something you don't see very often. The two page spreads are done wonderfully with nothing getting lost in the gutters. The expressions on the faces are done in such a way they just draw the reader right into the feelings of the children and the dog. Plus the choices of color are great because the children and dog are focused on the toys so the toys are done in bright colors pull your attention to them. I think this could very well be a serious Caldecott contender.Genie Bishophttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04566393050021849467noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8093828844549988070.post-18855835199477512932011-11-19T16:25:30.000-05:002011-11-19T16:25:30.000-05:00Thanks for sharing that link, Becky!
