The illustrations are beautiful in this book. Of course I was drawn in right away because the end pages are so wonderful. The story starts on earth and moves to the moon and so you open the book and there's the earth and moon, how great! For all children that didn't get a chance to sit on their grandmother's lap I think they imagine it the way it is illustrated in this book. It's a lap that completely consumes you and her smile warms you from head to toe. The next illustration that took my breath away was the one where the wave is coming to wipe out homes and lives. Again the two page spread is done so well that it takes your breath away. The color and the feeling of movement is fantastic. The illustrations are bright when it is the beginning of a life and dark when tragedy strikes. I think this has what it takes to be a Caldecott contender.
