A program of the Children's Services department of the Allen County (Indiana) Public Library. Please join our discussion of this year's best picture books for children.
Welcome to the ACPL Mock Caldecott Blog!
If you love children's picture books, you're in the right place. We take great joy in highlighting and discussing our favorite newly published picture books.
We hope you will join us in our discussion! Feel free to leave your comments on the titles we post. You are welcome to suggest new titles, as well. Simply leave a comment, or send us an email.
We have two Mock Caldecott events planned!
Families were invited to visit the Main Library on Saturday & Sunday, December 10 & 11, 2011. They looked over our books, learned about the Caldecott Award, and voted for their favorite books. Click here to see which books were elected by the children and families.
Adults -- librarians, teachers, parents, other interested adults -- are invited to attend our traditional Mock Caldecott Election on January 14, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Indiana librarians will earn 4 LEUs for attending; all participants will receive a certificate of attendance. We'll learn about the Caldecott Award, talk about our favorites, and vote for our own Mock Caldecott Award winners. Click here to register to attend the adult program.

I so wanted to love this book, but several of the illustrations seem a bit off to me. The one that comes to mind is the close-up of Stillwater laughing. It just doesn't seem right. How's that for my expansive use of art terms. Sorry.
The whole getting to know the neighbor seemed too rushed. And, where was the apple pie? Based on the text, I expected apple pie on the table. Perhaps it was in the oven baking?
I'm with you, Teresa. I wanted to like the book, but something just felt off about it. Oh well.
I loved this story. It was very unexpected. The play on words was thought-provoking and fun to read.
I did really enjoy the illustrations in the book. Overall, I thought they were delightful and beautiful.
There was something about the 'jump on Stillwater' picture that made me feel peaceful and free. I miss summer!
I agree with Teresa and pianolibrarian, I just couldn't get myself to like the book. At least not for a Caldecott, it's just not "The One."
Things just didn't seem quite right. I loved the connection that Stillwater facilitated with Miss Whitaker and Michael. The story of his success reminds me why I want to be a teacher. I really liked the picture of the children, Stillwater, and Koo at Miss Whitaker's for supper and Michael gives his ribbon to her. what a sweet, precious thing to do. The picture really captured the feelings and appreciation.
