Here Comes the Garbage Barge
written by Jonah Winter
illustrated by Red Nose Studio
Summary: In the spring of 1987, the town of Islip, New York, with no place for its 3,168 tons of garbage, loads it on a barge that sets out on a 162-day journey along the East Coast, around the Gulf of Mexico, down to Belize, and back again, in search of a place willing to accept and dispose of its very smelly cargo.

I can't say that I particularly like the illustrations in this book (I actually think they are a bit creepy), but they are certainly distinct and interesting.
As a side note, Chris Sickels, the "creative force behind Red Nose Studios" grew up on a family farm in Greenfield, IN.
Wildly creative and imaginative. Expressive and humorous. Without one identifiable illustrator, if it wins, who will be invited to the Today Show...the whole office? I hope it at least makes the Honor Book list. It's going in my personal library
