Interesting Article in The Horn Book Magazine
There was an interesting article in the March/April 2011 issue of The Horn Book:
What Makes a Good Picture Book Biography?
by Viki Ash and Thom Barthelmess
Definitely worth the time to read, it lists several features to look for in evaluating picture book biographies for children. My favorite few lines are these:
"In a well-crafted picture book, text and illustration share the storytelling duties...A picture book biography offers the illustrator an opportunity to do the same thing, using sophisticated imagery to complement the narrative with a sense of the time and place of the subject's life..."
I also especially like that they included examples of great books, and explained the features that make them great!
What do you think? How well do the picture book bios posted on this blog, or others that you'd like to discuss, hold up to these authors' criteria?
