Illustrated by Lynne Barasch

It was a miserable rainy night, in 1888 when a lonely stray puppy found his way into the Albany, New York Post office. The postal workers who found this sweet, loveable puppy named him Owney and decided to let him stay at the post office to guard the mail. Owney eventually became the official mascot of the post office and travels around the world with the mail.

First I have to say I just loved the story of Owney and secondly I thought it was illustrated wonderfully. The great job of illustrating started right off with the end pages too. I just love good end pages. Lynne Barasch use of ink-watercolor paintings fit the story perfectly in my opinion. The two-page spreads are in just the right places. The colors used in the illustrations gave me the impression right away that the story took place a long time ago and it did. The illustrations definitely make the story as far as I am concerned.

I loved this book, too, for all the reasons Genie mentions. I was also very pleased to see the photographs of Owney at the end of the book -- I felt like saying "Yep, that's him" when I saw the photos. And, well, it's just a great dog story.
